Self-awareness Leads to Hypnotherapy Career
Forget most of what you've seen on TV and in the movies about being hypnotized.
"I can’t make somebody do something they don’t want to do,” said Bryn Blankinship, CMHt, a certified master hypnotherapist who opened her full-time practice, Hypnotic Solutions, in 2003. “And it’s safe; you can’t get ‘stuck’ in hypnosis and you don’t reveal deep, dark secrets.
“It’s like being in a deeper sense of relaxation. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis; you’re still guiding yourself through a hypnotherapist’s suggestions.”
Originally from Richmond, Va., Blankinship was working as a legal secretary in Raleigh while also pursuing acting work. She had successfully worked with a hypnotherapist on combating stage fright and made a return visit to work on future progression, or creating in her mind the ideal future.
She found acting work in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia but wanted to be close to a movie studio while her husband, Terry Blankinship, a massage therapist, wanted to open a practice in the Port City. They relocated from Raleigh in 1998 but Bryn’s goal of being a full-time working actress slowed down when movie production moved into Canada.
An opportunity opened up for her in 1999, and with her husband’s encouragement and support to go after her dream, she drove out to California and stayed with a friend until that ideal future she had previously imagined came into fruition.
Within a few months of her arrival, she sublet a furnished apartment in ritzy Brentwood, Calif., for only $600 a month, an acting class led to securing a new agent and she was working in TV, film and commercials.
For the next two years she and her husband amassed frequent flier miles crisscrossing the country visiting one another. It was fun and a fulfillment of her dreams but enrolling in some classes at a hypnosis school owned by Florence Henderson’s husband took her in another direction: pursuing hypnotherapy as a career and returning to Wilmington.
She completed her coursework in hypnosis and received certification from both the National Guild of Hypnotists and the National Association of Transpersonal Hypnotherapists. She also studied with Dr. Michael Newton, author of Destiny of Souls.
She works by appointment in her office in the Porter's Neck area Tuesday-Friday and occasional nights and weekends. While she works with a variety of clients, the majority fall into four categories: those wanting to stop smoking, those wanting to lose weight, those wanting to deal with anxiety and stress and those interested in spiritual exploration and regression.
“With cigarette smoking I have very high success,” she said, citing 85 percent of her smoking clients quit after the first two-hour session and 95 percent quit by the second session. “It’s changing your patterns, your triggers, your association with cigarettes. We get to the root cause of the cigarette smoking.”

“I’m living my passion,” said Blankinship. “I love this as much as I thought I was going to enjoy acting.”

Hypnosis: Change Your Mind and You'll Change Your Life
A trip to Hollywood leads to a new career....
Bryn Blankinship is a certified master hypnotherapist and the founder of Hypnotic Solutions. It all started when Blankinship, then an actress, visited a local hypnotherapist to help with nerves before auditions and performances. This worked so well that she began using it for goal-setting. "It was great, I saw myself in the role I was auditioning for, experienced getting a call from my agent and being congratulated for booking it. I started booking more jobs right away," Blankinship says.
Guided into a relaxed state, Bryn was asked to describe her ideal career situation. "All I wanted to be was a working actress. No day job." Blankinship says. The images began to unfold in her mind. Within a year, she was in Hollywood, California with a new agent booking commercials and film work.
Many doors opened during that time. As exciting as this was, Bryn knew there was something else that she had been drawn to California to learn. Between gigs, she studied hypnosis at The Hypnosis Motivation Institute. When the actor's strike hit, she knew what she had to do. She packed up and came back to Wilmington to guide others through transformation in their lives.
Since then, Bryn has completed master level certification in both transpersonal and clinical hypnosis at the National Guild of Hypnotists and the National Association Transpersonal Hypnotherapists. Her advanced training allowed her to study with Dr. Roger Woolger, author of Other Lives, Other Selves, and Dr. Michael Newton, author of Journey of Souls, and Destiny of Souls. And she now serves as the membership director of the Michael Newton Institute for Life Between Lives Hypnotherapy.
"People come to me for a variety of reasons--anything from losing weight, quitting smoking, grieving over the loss of a loved one, fear of heights or crowds—to exploring their spiritual side. Many come for health reasons because hypnosis is so great for relieving stress, which is a contributing factor to so many illnesses."
For those who have never tried hypnosis, Bryn explains that being hypnotized feels like nothing more than "getting lost in a movie or driving your car and missing your exit; it’s a focused state of awareness." Most people remember everything that occurred. Because what you focus on grows, it shifts the focus on what you want and you stop worrying about the stuff you don't.
Some question whether they can actually be hypnotized. Generally, if you're of average intelligence (with no severe mental disorders), focus your thoughts, relax and follow instructions, then hypnosis can work for you. Hypnosis offers an effective, relaxing, drug-free choice for resolving personal issues and promoting wellness.
Bryn also works with groups and with teens. Kids carry a lot of stress from school, including peer pressure. Hypnosis is an effective tool by which to help them build self-esteem and focus on learning.
